A collection of short stories set in the late l950's / early 1960's and based upon the Author's own family whilst living in South Queensferry on the Southern shore of the River Forth. The stories are all beautifully written with the characters brought alive in a colourful and authentic manner. With his usual flair Mr. Gisby has managed to create a compilation of tales to warm and touch the heart of the reader. The tales contain depth, humour and pathos, and as always his characters generate compassion in the reader whilst they hold the interest from page to page. A nice added touch is the fact that most of them re-appear in the different stories and it's not until one has almost finished reading that one realises there is a continuing story-thread running throughout. Equally entertaining as a whole read or as individual reads, this is a most delightful book to add to anyone's bookshelf, and is to be especially enjoyed when curled up in the warm on a Winter's evening. This is the third book of Brendan Gisby's to be published this year, following the publication of "The Island of Whispers" and "The Olive Branch", and we hope to be seeing much more of what this most skilful and talented of Authors has to offer.

If you've read Gisby's "The Bookie Runner," which I have, some of these stories and tales will seem familiar to you, but I enjoyed revisiting them. As always, I'm in awe of this author's prose. His writing style is descriptive, but not overly so; I always feel in the moment. I'm a fan and will read anything he puts out. In fact, I believe I have two more of his on my Kindle that require my attention.

Ferry Tales Brendan Gisby 9781907407123 Books Reviews

Brendan Gisby has done it again! In this touching memoir, we're transported back to 1950/60's Scotland where the author grew up and are given a glimpse of his childhood.

I highly recommend this collection of short stories for anyone who enjoys travelling back to a simpler time. Both adults and young adults will like this humorous, sometimes sad but very relatable memoir.

In this collection of short stories, we meet his family and his friends and know everybody. If we don't know them personally, we're close to people very much like them. We suffer the hardships he and his family (and so many other families at the time) had to endure. We go on childhood adventures with him. We work alongside Mr. Gisby and his father. We even take his Dad's place at work at one point in the book.

While this reviewer was reading Ferry Tales, she couldn't help but think things like "You'd think he's talking about my sister." Or, "I had a friend just like that." There were several times throughout the book when I'd think, "I used to do things like that!" What is best about this book is that you don't have to be from Scotland to relate to these stories or the cast of characters. Ferry Tales shows you throughout the book that people are the same the world over. Like Mr. Gisby's other books, the characters and places are painted so realistically that we can reach out and touch them.

If you want to experience life in a Scottish village...just read this collection of short stories. The characters in these stories will become your family, friends, co-workers, and so on. Brendan Gisby has a way of making you feel as if you've known these people your whole life. All of the characters are brought to life, in such a way, that you're sure you've met them. I can see their faces and hear their voices as clearly as my own neighbors. It's amazing to me, that even if a character is merely mentioned, you feel you know them!

Although I loved every story, I must admit to having a favorite. In "The Legend", you'll fall in love with Kate Mckay! I would have loved the opportunity to meet and talk with her! Ohhh...the stories she would have told! Don't miss your chance to fall in love with Kate and all of the other wonderful characters in "Ferry Tales"!
