“ “Inkslingers Ball” is the perfect novel for an afternoon by the pool. With vivid characters, smooth writing, and a twisty plot, Sheila Lowe has crafted a mystery that will keep you guessing to the very end.”
—Boyd Morrison, International bestselling author
A teenage girl, brutally murdered and left in a trash dumpster; a young man, killed in a firebombing attack; a soccer mom, shot in the living room of her home; vicious thugs whose job is to protect a suspected criminal. Just another week on rotation for LAPD detective Joel Jovanic...until he uncovers a connection between the disturbing series of vicious crimes and Annabelle Giordano, who is in the temporary custody of his soulmate, Claudia Rose.
Annabelle is a troubled and traumatized teen who suffered the tragic loss of her mother and later witnessed the brutal murder of a beloved mentor. Neglected by a father who scarcely acknowledges her existence, it’s little wonder the girl makes some disastrous life choices.
But she has one staunch ally in Claudia, a highly regarded forensic graphologist who digs into the darkest of human secrets through the study of handwriting. When Annabelle involves herself with a questionable tattoo artist she re-opens a door to the grim side of life and goes down a path that could get her killed. A distraught Claudia will do anything to save her, even if it means jeopardizing her relationship with Jovanic.
“A fantastic tale that takes readers on a frightening journey through the seedy side of a tattoo empire.”
“Lowe expertly delivers a solid criminal investigation while guiding her readers into a unique culture where tattooing and the murder of a young girl come together on the autopsy table. Hit the lights and siren because this is one fast ride from beginning to end.”
—Lee Lofland, Author of “Police Procedure and Investigation” and founder and director of the Writers’ Police Academy

As an accidental fan of Claudia Rose, I was extremely impatient for Inkslinger's Ball. I have read other series, and have often found that as they progress they become a little predictable. Not so with Sheila Lowe's writing. And how clever to write this from Joel's point of view and the police aspect.I don't want to discuss story line (fabulous), or give away spoilers (hate that)! What I want to share is how thoroughly I was sucked in to the characters. I am an addicted reader, and enjoy many genres. Consequently, I can read and recognize it's just a story; put the book down and get back to real life. I can't remember too many times that I have had the lines blurred to the point that my reality becomes invested in the characters. I am a reader, not a writer (obviously!), and I can't verbalize how truly entranced I was with all the characters. I thought about them long after the book was finished. I worried about their future. Ridiculous, I know, but a true testimony to Sheila Lowe's impeccable writing style.
The back story of the art of handwriting analysis, police procedure, and even tattoo artistry shows the professionalism of Ms. Lowe's research. I can't say more without giving something away, so obviously my advice is to read this....

Inkslingers Ball Forensic Handwriting Mystery Book 5 edition by Sheila Lowe Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is yet another well-written book by Sheila Lowe that I didn't want to put down. I don't want to give away anything here, but readers of the Claudia Rose series and newbies alike will delight in this book. As it should be in a good mystery, it was impossible for me to figure out "whodunit." The book is so well written that I wanted to savor every word rather than rushing through, like I tend to do, to find out who the killer was and the reasoning behind the killings. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
Fascinating look at the underbelly of the seedier side of southern California.
The prison and cop lingo were not always clear to me, but got the gist anyway.
Claudia kept my attention riveted. Thank you for another good ride.
This has been my favorite book of the series. Started off good and just got better. For me, this one has a little more gritty and the action didn't stop!
There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep the page turning going at high speed. The book is also an interesting glimpse into the sometimes seedy tattoo world. The interpersonal relationships are well done and very interesting. I would highly recommend this as a top-notch read.
Another fast moving trip with Claudia. This time Joel and Annabelle are very tangled in a series of cases and deaths.
A fan of Sheila Lowe's since Poison Pen, this series just keeps getting better and better. Not only does Claudia's personality develop with each book but the characters she touches become friends! I've always loved the information dropped in discretely as you dive into the fast-paced action, and her teens are real and endearing. I kept saying "Don't do it, Annabelle!" I can guarantee you will love this book!
INKSLINGERS BALL, Sheila Lowe's fifth Forensic Handwriting Mystery, grabs your attention from the opening scene. The phone rings at 233 a.m., and Joel Jovanic, Lead Homicide Detective with the LAPD, must leave girlfriend Claudia Rose's warm bed to investigate a chilling crime; the brutal death of a young teenage girl. You can sense his horror and determination to solve "this one" and you are right there beside him.
Flashing back three days, Lowe meticulously leads her readers through a labyrinth of events to the gruesome discovery, beginning innocently enough with the introduction of a character from a previous novel. Annabelle Giordana, a traumatized teen which Claudia helped through graphology in WRITTEN IN BLOOD, is now living temporarily with Claudia. Much improved, she still has remnants of rebellion that work their way to the surface now and then. They're usually harmless - pouting or sulking when she doesn't get her way - but this time, Annabelle gets in way over her head.
She meets up with a young street walker from her past. Angel – pierced, tattooed, and spouting gutter language – soon has Annabelle straying from the straight and narrow, enticing the underage girl to get a "sugar skull" tattoo just like hers. Annabelle succumbs. Soon she is boozed up, laid out in an old van with a strange man laying ink in a very private area, and totally unaware of the dark alley Angel has started her down. It's an alley full of death and darkness with fingers reaching way into the past.
Several seemingly unrelated murders keep Jovanic's team busy leading up to and beyond the opening crime. They investigate, interview, access police data bases, and soon connections appear. In the world of ink and piercing, it's hard to tell what is innocent and what is deadly. Artistic ink covers jealous and vengeful hearts. It also hides a multitude of other crimes that the police seem powerless to stop.
The final climax is shocking. Readers may be prepared for something similar, but when this scene takes place, jaws will drop. The reverberations and mop-up will eventually bring satisfaction, although one small aspect may be open for question to some legal purists. INKSLINGERS BALL is definitely an outstanding addition to the series.
Disclosure Some readers may not like the instances of profanity or trash talk, but it is not gratuitous and fits the characters' personas. On the whole, INKSLINGERS BALL is a very enjoyable read!
